Mission

To pray for and with artists—and those who appreciate the arts—so as to advance the Culture of Life.

Vision

Our vision is of a culture that reveres beauty both as God’s gift to humanity as well as a prayerful response to Him for His love for us—a culture that appreciates the presence of God in all of creation as well as in the creative process.

Goals

So as to advance the Culture of Life, through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and under the patronage of Our Lady of Lourdes, we will:

  1. Recite the Stabat Mater Prayer for Artists every day.
  2. Offer Masses, Rosaries, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, the SMPA Beauty Chaplet, or simply the name of Jesus, for artists.
  3. Facilitate connections among artists and arts supporters by every means possible.

The Long-Term Goals

  1. Seek to strengthen the bond between the world of art and the world of faith, between artists and arts supporters, by developing an online community of Catholic religious and laymen committed to praying for artists. We will accept prayer requests and facilitate connections among artists and between artists and arts supporters, by personal contact, phone, and e-mail correspondence, or through the SMPA Web site,www.stabatmater.org.
  2. Encourage parish members to form small prayer/study groups that explore the 2,000-year artistic heritage of the Roman Catholic Church, emphasizing the essential themes of Christianity as evidenced through the arts.
  3. Build a chapel and develop work and retreat spaces as we are able. A rural educational retreat would give sacred artists a place to work and learn, while providing spiritual renewal. If resources allow, a desert place of silence and solitude could also deepen artist visitors’ sense of the sacred.

Fruits of the Luminous Mysteries

Baptism of the Lord = humble joy at realizing the gift of the Sacrament of Baptism.

Miracle of the Wedding at Cana = Belief in miracles and the omnipotent goodness of God.

Proclamation of the Kingdom of God = Fearless defense of the One True Faith.

Transfiguration of the Lord = Growing union with Our Lord so as to become more and more like him, through Mary.

Institution of the Holy Eucharist = Willingness to die for the doctrine of the Real Presence.

From "A Psalm of Life" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow:

Tell me not, in mournful numbers,
Life is but an empty dream!
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem.

Life is real! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal;
Dust thou art, to dust returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul.

Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
Is our destined end or way;
But to act, that each tomorrow
Finds us farther than today.

Prayer for Artists

Dearest Lord, you have set aside a vocation for each of us. We ask you to guide those whom you have called to be artists to endeavor to participate in the renewal of beauty in our culture through the use of their vocation. We ask you for a renewal of a bond between the world of art and the world of faith.

May artists brave the culture and bring Christ to all God's children through their gift, the gift of an artistic vocation. We thank you for the beauty of your creation and ask for your blessing upon all artists that they may awaken in all people a knowledge of your love and omnipotence. We love you God and we praise you. Amen.
